Family Territory

In the past couple of weeks, I've been doing some serious thinking about our family history (or lack thereof). I begged my grandma to keep a notebook and write some things down... her handful of favorite stories even.  I told her she didn't have to make it entertaining, just jot down some notes about the most important details.  But she refuses.

When I was young, she used to tell me story after story about being born in Alaska (back when it was a territory).  She lived in a small town named Cordova.  When I was a teenager, my grandparents took a ferry to Cordova to look at the town and see some other parts of Alaska.  They offered to take me (at the last minute when we were at the ferry dock).  Being a snotty teen, I couldn't imagine a trip wearing the same outfit the whole time.  Now I regret not going.  I wish I could have seen the little house my grandma lived in.  They lived in a big house on the hill.  Originally, the house was built as part of a church property, but the church decided the hill was too steep and difficult to navigate in the snow, so they sold it to my grandma's father and mother.

My grandma's mother had been a nurse, visiting from Illinois, when she met "Mr. Koch" as she called him in her letters.  She ended up moving to Alaska to marry him.  They married in 1918.  My grandma came along about a year and a half later.

My grandma's mother died when my grandma was only six.  Ironically, even though Edna was a nurse, she died of blood poisoning from an infection.  I think that haunts my grandma to this day that she didn't really have a mother around or remember much about her.  Her father hired a housekeeper to help out with raising my grandma.

My grandma's father ran the dairy in town (Lakeside Dairy) and had *the only* horse.  Bill pulled the milk wagon around town, and all of the kids would run out to see him. My great-grandfather also ended up working on the railroad during the war.  The government recruited him to help with it because he was one of the only people around who knew anything about logistics and handling big projects.  He remarried at some point after sending my grandma (when she was 12) to Tacoma to live with her aunt.  She never lived in Alaska again after that.  She met friends and had so much fun in Tacoma, she didn't want to go back home.

Talkin' 'Bout My Generation

For the past month or so, my grandmother has been in and out of the hospital (mostly in [almost a full month]).  Every day, when we'd go to visit, she'd delight in telling the nurses (or anyone else who would listen), how our family has five generations alive right now.  She is a great-great grandma, and totally proud of it.

Jessica and I have been thinking a lot about family and connections through the generations.  There are too many missing links on all sides of our family trees.  That is the way with absent parents and/or adoptions.  I know that I wish I would have been more interested in the family tree back when I was younger and so many more of the relatives were alive.  Too little, too late.

One thing that I was over-the-moon thrilled about though... my grandma relinquished some of her old photo albums.  She was going to get rid of them (to a thrift store, like she did with a bunch of others [like a stab in the eye with an ice pick]), but since I wanted them, she gave some of them to me.  Yay.

Here are a couple of my treasures that I scanned.

I See...

Sunshine!

It is strange how, in late August or early September, the sun is shining, but you can definitely feel a difference in the air.  Inevitably there is that telltale feeling of Fall that creeps in between the rays of Summer sunshine.  The leaves are all still green on the trees, and the breeze is blowing through them.

There is a certain way the sun hangs in the sky during early September.  It always causes waves of memories to rush though my mind, and I almost always feel wistful and nostalgic about September.

Today is Labor Day, and I have so many memories of when we were young.  My mom would take my brother and me, and we'd trudge off to some big union picnic on Labor Day.  I remember standing on a sandy ball field in Seattle, eating barely-warm hot dogs from paper plates, while we listened to a string of excited people talking over a loudspeaker... talking about how Labor Day was important to recognize because workers didn't always have rights.  (I think we've slipped backward from those days, but at least we haven't gone all the way to the dark ages yet).

I remember being excited for Labor Day because it meant that school was about to start.  I remember walking to school in the chill of the morning, and home from school in that September sunshine and feeling too warm in my new fall wardrobe.  My grandma would tell me to wait for cooler weather to wear some things, but I was always so excited to get new school clothes, I could never wait.  September and October (my birthday) were really the only times we ever got new clothes, so it was always a big deal.  Back then, you couldn't wear shorts or flip flops to school.  I can't imagine what the kids now would do.

Another memory that sunny Septembers conjure up is the start of the Puyallup Fair.  Seventeen days of craziness.  When we were growing up, we lived on the north hill and didn't have to deal much with Fair traffic unless it was a really nice weekend day or if there was a big concert.  If so, we'd get traffic backed up all the way up the hill in front of our house.  Now, we live six blocks from the Fair, and it is a constant juggling act during the 17-day run.  But this year, we'll be able to take little mister on some rides, so that should be fun.  New memories.

Sunshine.  September.  Sigh.

One Little Word: Blog Hop

Welcome to May and the One Little Word Blog Hop!

Thanks to Margie for hosting.  You should have arrived from Tere's blog, but if not, you can always check out all of the blogs below.

I can't believe how quickly the first four months of the year have passed.  It is sheer craziness.

This month, in the One Little Word class, Ali encouraged participants to write a letter to ourselves (or our future selves).  I did write one at futureme.org.  I was silly not to think about saving the message, but since I can't go back and see it (it will be emailed to me in a year), I decided to jot down some thoughts and include it in a digital scrapbook layout of sorts with a similar letter to myself.  I still haven't gotten around to creating a more traditional book like Ali does, but if I wait to do that, I'll never get it done.  :)  So digi it is!

It was good to sit down and think about my word and where it is taking me and/or where I hope to be next year.  I took the picture with my phone a couple of nights ago because I hadn't had a picture of me in my new glasses.  I only wear them at night, but I think they are kind of fun.

Have you ever written yourself a letter to be opened in the future?  If not, you might want to try it.  It is kind of a fun thing to take on, and I'm sure it will be even more fun to read next year.  :)

That is all I have for now, next up is Brighton.

If you got lost somewhere along the way or want to see the rest of the list... here are all of the participants:

Feeling Creative? Survey Says...

Back in December, I started a graduate program in education.  I've always been interested in teaching, so it seemed like a natural fit.  The only downside is that they expect me to have students because almost everyone else in the program is already teaching in some capacity.  That is a smidgen of a problem for me.  So I have to ask you, for help.  If you are interested/willing, check out a quick (14 multiple-choice questions) survey on creativity.  I promise it is anonymous and completely painless.  And you will probably score some good karma points.

To participate... simply click on the link below to be taken to the survey.  Easy as pie.

10 Things

So since I nearly forgot about 10 things on the 10th of the month, I am going to do a quick post and use the theme of family (from NaBloPoMo) for my ten things.

Ten things you may or may not know about my family:

Liz & Jessica
  • For awhile, I forgot I had a sister.  My sister was born when I was 18 and out of the house, so for a little while, if people asked me if I had siblings, I would only mention my brother.  (Sorry, Lizzy.)  But now I have it under control and will always mention her.  Which leads to...
  • My daughter and my sister are the same age.  My sister is two months and a day older than Jessica, so my mom and I were pregnant at the same time.  I swear, Father of the Bride II stole our story, although we didn't go into labor at the same time (obviously).
  • For a little over a year (in 2001-02), my brother and I lived next door to each other, but the only time we really saw each other was when we ran into each other in the grocery store.
  • My grandma is going to be 92 in two months.  Today would have been my grandpa's 100th birthday (if he was still alive).  My grandma is still living on her own, driving, and in good health (in spite of the car accident she had on Wednesday afternoon).
  • My mom and her mom (my grandma) haven't talked in about 24 years.  Lots of old family issues that could never be resolved and came to the breaking point when I was pregnant with my daughter.  They got in a fight then, and weren't even in the same room with each other until my bridal shower sixteen years later (where they ignored each other).
  • My mom was adopted when she was 6.  She was taken from an abusive home and adopted out to my grandparents.  When I was 16, she found out about her birth family.  Every once in awhile she learns something new about them.  One of the "fun" facts is that her biological grandmother participated in the "world's oldest profession."
  • My in-laws are about the same age as my grandma.  My MIL is 91 and my FIL is 88.  It seemed sort of strange at first, but they are really really sweet people.
  • My step-daughter and step-son moved to and live in Walla Walla, with their mom.  We don't get to see them often nowadays, but when Tim and I first got together, we had one or the other of the kids for several years.  Tim is a great dad, and his kids should feel lucky to have him.
  • My dad committed suicide in May of 2008.  It still bothers me and makes me feel bad.  We weren't close at the time, so I guess that makes me feel even more guilty.
  • He was not my biological dad.  My biological dad (and his family) didn't want to have anything to do with me.  He signed over any rights to me when my mom married and my dad adopted me.  To this day, I have never had any contact with my biological dad.  I don't really care to.  My mom thinks that is odd since it was a big thing for her to find her biological roots.

So that is that.

What sorts of oddities do you have in your family tree?

One Little Word: Blog Hop

One Little Word.

It seems so very simple, really.  But it is far from simple.  A few years ago, I was following the blog of Ali Edwards and she talked about how she was choosing one word for the year, to focus on and bring to her life.  In the back of my mind, I'd always pick a word, but I rarely did anything with it other than notice it if and when it popped up in my life.  Last year, I signed up for Ali's OLW class at Big Picture Classes.  I was determined to do something with my word.  But even after signing up for the class, I found that I didn't do anything much with my word.  At the end of last year, I decided I wouldn't choose a word for this year.

But then I got sucked in and wanted to do it.  I've always wanted to do it, but I am not the best with follow-through.  At the first of the year, I started mulling over words in my mind.  I picked one and was happy with it.  But then, it didn't really feel right.  I signed up for Ali's class a bit late, and my word still wasn't really resonating with me.  My daughter didn't think the word fit me either (not that you are supposed to let someone else have a say in your word choice...lol).  But after she said that, it really did seem that my first word wasn't a good choice.  Then my word found me.  I could hear it clearly in my head.  It was even lovelier because was spoken with an amazing partially-British accent.  My word was DARING.  The partially-British accent came from Simon de Pury.  We watch Work of Art: The Next Great Artist.  He was forever telling contestants to "Be Bold!  Be Daring!"  Daring is what I wanted for my word.  I made my choice.  I created myself this little mini poster as a reminder.

Simon de Pury photo from poptower.com

And my word has already helped.  I applied to be a contributing writer at a website I just love. I hadn't heard back from the owner, so I finally decided to be daring and email her.  It was a good thing I did.  She had been bogged down with other things and hadn't had a chance to go through the applications.  She responded back and told me she'd love to have me on board.  Yay!

I'm looking forward to combining my OLW with my Project Life instead of doing it separately because I think that will definitely keep me on track and more efficient than trying to do two projects I've never completed before.  I can't wait to see what Ali has in store for February!

Project Life Tuesday: Week 1

So yeah, I'm still behind.  But I'm keeping track of everything.  LOL.  Jessica is too and we're reminding each other of things we might have missed.  I did feel somewhat better knowing that there are some people who are just finishing their 2011 project life books.

I came to the realization that I am going to have to do a digi page first, and then I'll be able to do my real-life version because I'll have the pictures selected and cropped, and I think mostly in digi these days.

Please tell me someone else is taking this project slow?  :D

I'm linking up with The Mom Creative.com and Kristina over at www.one-happy-mama.com.  Check out their stuff!

Project Life Tuesday

I thought I'd try to link up with Jessica Turner over at the Mom Creative today for her Project Life Tuesday.  I think it is a good way to be accountable with my project life stuff.

So far, I have not accomplished a whole lot with my Project Life.  I am arriving a bit late to the party.  I saw a lot about PL from different sources, but I thought that it was completely outside the range of something I'd want to try.  That was before I started seeing all of the Project Life supplies out there, I saw a bunch of terrific/inspiring layouts, and my daughter bought the PL Clementine kit and binder from Becky Higgins.  Once I saw her opening the package, I was sold.  I've gone back and forth about whether I wanted to do all digital, to do it traditionally or to do some sort of hybrid.  Of course, being sort of a supply hoarder at heart, I can't pick just one.  I am sure, in the long run, I'll stick with the digital version and be more likely to complete it that way, but there is something tactile and wonderful about slipping those perfect little cards into the page protectors that just screams out to me, so I have both as an option.  I know that I'm not likely to print pictures out at home, or to send them to be printed weekly, but I figure that I can do it digitally, and then decide what pictures I do want to send to print and can do that on a monthly basis, getting the traditional pages ready without the photos at the time.  Just typing that makes me laugh.  I am so horrible with follow-through, I don't know how I'll even complete one version, much less two, but I am going to give it a shot.

Today I scanned in some items for digi pages to be completed in the next few days, and then I tucked them into my traditional pages.  So far, I've just completed my digital "cover page" and I had fun putting it together.  I know that I'm going to have to be better about reviewing my digital products to see what I have as far as embellishment, but I think once I get going, it will all be good.  My digital cover...

The Tattered Pear - Sullen Seamstress1, Valorie Wibbens - Today paper, Today Journal Cards, Pocket Stuffers & Pockets No. 3, Lauren Reid - Hometown elements, TDC Shutterbug Collab - The Story of Us button, Ali Edwards - Hello Life stamps, Becky Higgins - Project Life Clementine digital kit
I'm looking forward to doing this, and I'm also excited that Jessica is going to do it as well.  It will be interesting to see what she comes up with, and it will also be good to keep me on track.

Are you participating in Project Life?  Are you doing digi or traditional??

10 Things

10 Things

Shimelle hosts 10 Things on the 10th.  Check her out.  :)

Over at The Lily Pad, there is a discussion going on about stats and faves of 2011.  You can check it out here.  I normally wouldn't have thought about how many scrapbook layouts I did in any given year, but that thread got me thinking, and I had to go back and count them up.  I accomplished more than I believed, largely because I was on a CT for a bit and got a bunch done for her massive product releases.  It was a fun time.  Anyway, I ended up completing 86 layouts.  I was happy with that number because it was averaging more than 1 a week even though there were bursts of activity and big giant lulls when I did no scrapping whatsoever.

I thought I'd go back and post a ten of my favorite layouts from 2011.

1.  This was one of my favorites because I seriously worked so very hard on this.  It was for a challenge at Sweet Shoppe, and you had to include 25 words about yourself.  It took me quite awhile to go through my digi stash and find enough words (that fit) and elements that were the right color (or could be re-colored).
2.   I loved this because I created the stamp with the art quote.  It is also a picture of a painting I did for my friend, Jerisha, for Christmas.
3. A fun picture of my daughter and her friend Amy.  I love the colors and the viewmaster reel.
4. A funky layout (I believe it was a scraplift challenge) of our dog, Bobby.  I loved the unserious nature of it.
5. I loved the kit I used in this layout.  I also loved the picture, and I liked how it all came together.  I ended up posting this for a challenge at TLP, only to have it deleted because the kit was from Oscraps.  Oops.  I re-did it using TLP products for the challenge, but still like how this one turned out.

6.  I loved this picture of little mister wiping ice cream off his mom's face.  I also loved loved loved this kit from Dani Mogstad.
7.  The pictures of Tim and I are few and far between.  It isn't the best picture, but I liked it anyway, and I love having a layout of the two of us.

8. This is a layout I did during a speed scrap at Sweet Shoppe on National Scrapbooking day in May.  This is my nephew, Lucian, and it is rare to catch him smiling, so I loved this layout.
9. I love Sara Gleason's templates (Zinnia and Swallowtails), and this is one of those weird layouts that just sort of happened without planning, and I really loved the funkiness of it all.
 10. I am not a big fan of having my picture taken. I rarely create any layouts featuring myself, but this was for a speed scrap, and I like how it turned out.  I love the painty stuff, the sequins and the stitching.

Have you picked out your favorite layouts/projects of the year?  If not, why haven't you?  It is kind of fun to go back over and see what you did, if your style changed over the course of 12 months and/or what you documented.

Meal Planning Monday

Toward the end of last September, I put together a menu plan for the entire remaining days of the year.  For the most part, we stuck to it.  There were a couple of glitches and a couple of times we went off the rails, but kind of amazingly, we made it through with fairly little effort.  So far this year, I have been out of the menu-planning frame of mind, but now I realize I need to get back into the swing of things.  I am going to start small, with just this week and a theme of comfort food, and then after the big birthday shindig on Sunday, I will have greater mental capacity for planning further out.

Cottage Pie: pic from MarthaStewart.com

Monday:  Cottage Pie
Tuesday:  Pork Carnitas
Wednesday:  Chicken Caesar Salad
Thursday:  Homemade mac & cheese
Friday: Out
Saturday:  Spaghetti
Sunday:  party food

What do you have on the menu this month?
